A4 paper is not 210 × 297 mm by accident
The numbers look random. The geometry is not.

A4 is everywhere: letters, contracts, forms, invoices, school documents and the mysterious sheet your printer insists it cannot find. Its size — 210 by 297 millimetres — looks oddly arbitrary. But there is a very neat idea hiding behind those numbers.
The trick is in the proportions.
Paper in the A series is designed so that every size has almost the same shape.
Cut an A4 sheet in half across its longer side and you get two A5 sheets. Put two A4 sheets together and you get A3.
The proportions stay essentially the same each time.
That only works with one special ratio.
If the longer side is about 1.414 times the shorter side — the square root of two — halving the sheet produces a smaller rectangle with the same proportions.
That is the clever bit.
It means a document can be enlarged or reduced between A-series sizes without suddenly becoming a different shape.
So where do 210 and 297 come from?
The A series starts with A0, which has an area of one square metre and uses the same proportions.
Each smaller size is made by halving the previous one: A0 becomes A1, then A2, A3, A4 and so on.
After rounding dimensions to whole millimetres, A4 comes out at 210 × 297 mm.
Your office printer owes geometry a thank-you.
Because the proportions stay consistent, documents can move between A4, A3 and A5 with relatively simple scaling.
That is useful for printers, photocopiers, forms and layouts.
It is a rare example of paperwork becoming easier because of mathematics.
A4 is weirdly specific for a very good reason.
So the next time a form demands A4 and absolutely refuses to accept anything else, remember: at least the dimensions were not chosen by throwing darts at a ruler.
